Non-Resident Deer and Turkey Permits: The remaining non-resident 2011 Illinois combination archery deer permits, non-resident antlerless-only archery deer permits, and non-resident archery fall turkey permits are available over-the-counter (OTC) from DNR Direct license and permit vendors.

Public Duck and Goose Hunting Area Permits: Resident hunters may apply online through Sept. 13 for the second lottery for the Illinois 2011 Public Duck and Goose Hunting Area Permit program. The second lottery is open to those unsuccessful resident applicants from the first lottery, residents who didn’t apply in the first lottery, and non-residents. The third lottery deadline for anyone to apply for their first or second permit is Sept. 27. All initial applications must be made online at www.dnr.illinois.gov/duck or www.dnr.illinois.gov/goose

Wingshooting Clinics: The IDNR and participating partners sponsor wingshooting clinics at sites throughout Illinois to help improve the shooting skills of participants. Youth/Women's clinics are designed to teach participants basic firearm and hunter safety and the fundamentals of wingshooting. Hunter clinics are designed to enhance the wingshooting skills of hunters and provide sound wingshooting practice techniques. The clinics will be conducted on weekends. Online Free Site Hunting Permits: Hunters are reminded that Free Site Hunting Permits (windshield cards) to hunt upland, forest game and waterfowl at IDNR sites are now available online from the IDNR website at www.dnr.illinois.gov. Navigate to ‘Hunting/Trapping’ and then ‘Public Hunting Areas’ to print these permits. Hunters are encouraged to view the link to hunter fact sheets also available at the site. Watch the IDNR homepage link for new sites being added to this online service. For information or assistance, hunters should contact the site where they intend to hunt.
Controlled Pheasant Permits: Hunters can now apply for 2011-12 Illinois controlled pheasant hunting permits. Permits are available for use at 19 IDNR sites, 15 of which are operated by the IDNR, while four sites are managed by concessionaire T. Miller, Inc.

OutdoorIllinois: The cover of the September 2011 issue of the IDNR monthly magazine, OutdoorIllinois, features a wood duck hen and her young perched on a branch over the I & M Canal in LaSalle County. Featured this month is an article about the use of unique sampling methods to contribute to a nearly 100-year tradition of collecting wood duck population data.

Sportsman’s Raffle: Tickets are available for the 2011 Illinois Conservation Foundation Sportsman’s Raffle with a $100,000 first-place prize. Tickets for the raffle are $100 each. The grand prize of $100,000 will be presented at a drawing in Sangamon County on Thursday, December 1, 2011. Proceeds from the raffle will support youth conservation education and outdoor recreation programs at the ICF’s Torstenson Family Youth Conservation Education Center. Raffle tickets are $100 each and are available online at www.ilcf.org and by mail at Illinois Conservation Foundation, One Natural Resources Way, Springfield, IL 62702-1271. The raffle is being conducted in accordance with the Raffles Act. All business operations of the raffle take place exclusively in Sangamon County.

JEPC Youth Deer Hunt: Youth hunters interested in participating in the 2011 Illinois Youth Firearm Deer Hunt on Oct. 8-9 at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area (JEPC) must submit a postcard to the site office by Sept.16 to enter a drawing for 75 hunters to hunt the two open units at the site. The drawing will be held Sept. 17. Applicants should provide their name, age, address and phone number. The postcards should be mailed to: Youth Deer Hunt, JEPC, 10149 County Highway 11, Chandlerville, IL 62627. Successful applicants will be notified and they can purchase a Cass County permit for the Youth Firearm Deer Hunt over the counter from a DNR Direct license and permit vendor (see vendor list at http://dnr.illinois.gov/DNRDirectMonitor/VendorListing.aspx). Coffeen Lake Youth Deer Hunt: IDNR will conduct a drawing on Sunday, Sept. 18 for three youth to hunt deer during the Illinois Youth Firearm Deer Season on Oct 8-9 at the Coffeen Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area-Upland Management Area. Participating youth must have a valid Montgomery County Youth Firearm Deer Permit. To be eligible for the Sept. 18 drawing, the youth’s name, mailing address, and contact number must be printed on a 3" x 5" postcard and received at the Coffeen Lake SFWA site office by close of business on Sept. 17. Successful applicants will have until Sept. 30 to apply for and report their Montgomery County Youth Firearm Deer Permit number to the Coffeen Lake site office. Trapping at JEPC: A public drawing for the allocation of Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area (JEPC) trapping permits will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. at the site headquarters, located approximately five miles southeast of Chandlerville. One permit for each of the five trapping zones will be allocated through the drawing procedure. All persons entering the drawing must have a current 2011 trapping license in possession. At JEPC, only Egg Traps, DP (Dog Proof) Traps, box traps, cage traps and traps of similar action may be used. Homemade dog-proof traps must be designed with a foot hold trap no larger than a number two size in an enclosed wood, metal or durable plastic container with a single access opening of no larger than 1½ inch diameter. Sangchris Lake Trapping Drawing: A public drawing for the allocation of Sangchris Lake State Park trapping permits will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15. Registration will be at 12:30 p.m. at the site headquarters, located approximately six miles southeast of Rochester. One permit for one trapping zone will be allocated through the drawing procedure. Two names will be allowed on the permit, and only those individuals listed will be allowed to trap. All persons entering the drawing must have a current 2011 trapping license in possession. Super Saturday: The Ill. St. Museum ‘Super Saturdays’ event on Sept. 10 is “Museum Kicks on Route 66” – celebrating a special part of Illinois history along Route 66. Science Series: The Ill. St. Museum Science Series program on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. is “Pottersville: Home of American Alkaline Glazed Stoneware.” Presented by George Calfas, a doctoral student at the University of Illinois, the program focuses on the Edgefield Pottery District in South Carolina, the epicenter of a groundbreaking stoneware ceramic industry during the 19th century. Reminder: A new Illinois law allows landowners or lessees the option of using purple paint markings on trees or posts on their property as a “no trespassing” notice.
