2011 USCA Canoe & Kayak National Championships coming to Michigan

The 2011 USCA Canoe & Kayak National Championships race is coming to the Muskegon River in Newaygo, Michigan August 9-14.

In the only international athletic competition in Michigan this year, nearly 1,000 participants from across the United States, Canada, and beyond will canoe, kayak and paddle down the Muskegon River in the final event of the competitive paddling season.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this competition that brings the world’s best paddlers to Michigan waters,” said Kurt Dettmer, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Fremont Insurance, which is sponsoring the event. “As part of Fremont’s Pure Michigan initiative, we are proud to support an event that really highlights the great natural resources Michigan has to offer, and excited that our sponsorship will go towards making it easier for the media to share imagery of Michigan with their audiences throughout the world.”

The Newaygo Nationals races will begin Tuesday, Aug. 9 and run through Sunday, Aug. 14. Events include canoe and kayak sprints, canoe instructor certification courses, youth sprints, biathlons, marathons and costume and fun paddling.

“We truly appreciate Fremont’s involvement to help us share news of the National Championships far and wide,” said Scott Faulkner, Treasurer of Newaygo Nationals. “Newaygo is excited to host an event that will properly showcase these incredible athletes, and none of it would be possible without the community support we continue to receive.”
