Michigan's Clear Lake State Park’s new trail opens to ORV riders

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently announced that Clear Lake State Park in Atlanta in Montmorency County has opened a trail spur that offers Off Road Vehicle (ORV) riders a direct connection to the Atlanta ORV route and the Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail.

In addition to the new trail spur, Clear Lake State Park now has a land use order in place that permits ORV riders to use park roadways for access into and out of the campground area.

According to DNR Parks and Recreation Division Chief Ron Olson, the new trail spur makes the park a convenient and accessible base camp for ORV enthusiasts.

“Clear Lake State Park is the only state park campground in the Lower Peninsula where ORV users can camp in a state park, ride their ORV from their campsite to a trail system, spend the day riding, and then return to the park without ever having to tow their equipment to a trailhead or other location,” Olson said.

Clear Lake State Park is located at 20500 M-33 North, nine miles north of Atlanta in the heart of Michigan’s elk country. The park contains 200 campsites, all with 20 or 30 amp electric service, modern restrooms with showers, swimming, boat rentals and nature programs during the summer months.

In addition to the hundreds of miles of ORV trails and routes that are now accessible directly from the campground, the park features two sandy shallow beaches, mountain biking and hiking trails, a mini cabin, and is a great central location for exploring northeastern Michigan.

Clear Lake also offers non-motorized trails with direct access to the High Country Pathway, a 70-mile loop trail along the Pigeon River Country State Forest, which is open to mountain bikers and hikers. With thousand of acres of state land around the park, hunting opportunities abound, whether for game, morel mushrooms or wild blueberries.
