The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust will host Summer Saturdays at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Robie House, in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, this summer. Beginning Saturday, June 18, and operating through Saturday, August 20, Summer Saturdays features family programs in the morning and an evening sampler that highlights a different Chicago cultural partner each week. The featured Chicago cultural institution will entertain guests while discussing their organization’s summer programs. The evening sampler is complete with drinks, hors d’oeuvres and a festive, casual atmosphere where guests can wander the museum at their leisure.
Designed to engage the entire family and offer opportunities for deeper engagement with Wright’s icon of modern design, Summer Saturdays begins with youth and family programs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and features the following educational programs: LEGO® Architects, Art Glass Done Wright, Sun Prints, Nature’s Architects, Designing Spaces, Froebel Block Workshop and Origami. Every youth and family program is facilitated by a youth educator to provide instructions and assist throughout the project. All morning sessions are $5 per child and free for an accompanying adult.
LEGO® Architects allows children to create a 3D model of their own floor plan while assisting with concepts such as scale and proportion. Art Glass Done Wright offers a brief tour of the Robie House windows and encourages participants to create their own art-glass designs using tracing paper, colored pencils and construction paper. Similar to Art Glass Done Wright, Sun Prints offers a tour of the Robie House art-glass designs and allows children to arrange materials on light-sensitive paper, expose in the sunlight, and develop the paper in a water bath. Kids will investigate the many types of habitats that animals design and live in with Nature’s Architects as well as learn how Frank Lloyd Wright was inspired by nature to create his unique organic architecture. With Designing Spaces, parents and budding architects will test their skill at designing a scaled floor plan of a two-bedroom apartment with Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy in mind. Problem-solve with the Froebel Blocks, geometric shapes that Frank Lloyd Wright played with as a child; and discover how Japanese art influenced Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture, and learn basic folds and designs with the Origami session to make figures inspired by architecture.
Saturday evenings this summer the Robie House features a festive, casual atmosphere as guests are treated to cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while exploring the National Historic Landmark at their leisure and learning about exciting new programs, events and projects other Chicago cultural institutions are set to unveil this summer. Summer Evening Samplers feature informal tours of the building and a presentation by a different cultural partner each week from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 for members and $35 for non-members.
The Summer Evening Sampler welcomes curators, directors and presidents from cultural institutions such as the Mies van der Rohe Society, Smart Museum of Art, Oriental Institute, DuSable Museum of African-American History, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, National Museum of Mexican Art, Court Theatre, and Loyola University Museum to discuss their projects, exhibits and events this summer. Highlights include discussions of Mies van der Rohe’s Modernist masterpiece, Crown Hall; an exploration of the Robie House’s innovative dining room table; the restoration and preservation of Daniel H. Burnham’s National Historic Landmark—the Roundhouse stables; an exploration of ancient Egypt before the pyramids with an Egyptologist; an investigation of nature’s architects; an examination of the Wixaritari culture through photographs and artwork; and highlights of European art from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and Baroque eras. The series concludes with a wine-tasting event featuring the selections from Park 52.
Summer Saturdays at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House feature family programs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and a Summer Evening Sampler that highlights Chicago cultural institutions from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday from June 18 to August 20, with the exception of Saturday, July 2.
