Great Lakes Kite Festival at Michigan's Grand Haven State Park set for May 20-22

All eyes will be on the skies over Michigan's Grand Haven State Park during the Great Lakes Kite Festival, scheduled Friday through Sunday, May 20-22.

While weather and wind are determining factors for festival events, organizers plan to feature giant inflatable kites aloft all day Saturday, with various stunt kite performers taking turns throughout the day. This event will also include kite exhibits, flying demonstrations and giant kites.

Specific events will also depend on the weather/wind, but the general schedule includes warm-ups from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 20; demonstrations on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 21; followed by a Night Fly from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. The festival concludes with flying demonstrations planned from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 21.

This weekend event is being held at the park’s beach off Harbor Drive, on the shore of Lake Michigan, and promises to fill the sky with colorful kites of all types and sizes. Spectators are welcome to bring their own kites to fly on the open flying field, or try one of the manufacturers’ demo kites. All events are free to campers and the general public.

Grand Haven State Park is located at 1001 Harbor Ave. in Grand Haven in Ottawa County off US-31 (signage provides direction to the park entrance).
