To celebrate “It’s Our River Day,” the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will offer free fishing at state parks on Saturday, September 18. On this day, anyone may fish without a sport fishing license, inland trout stamp or salmon stamp.
“We hope events like ‘It’s Our River Day’ will spark interest in our youth and introduce a new generation to the joy of fishing and the beauty of our state parks,” IDNR Director Marc Miller said. “Rivers are too important to take for granted and that’s what ‘It’s Our River Day’ is all about - it’s about celebrating the wonderful river system we have here in the land of Lincoln.”
The “Free Fishing Day” on September 18 applies to both Illinois residents and non-residents. Free fishing on that day will only be allowed within the boundaries of Illinois state parks, natural areas and wildlife areas where public fishing opportunities are available. The “Free Fishing Day” waiver of fishing license requirements will not include fishing on the Illinois waters of Lake Michigan or on river positions outside of Illinois state park boundaries.
“It’s Our River Day” is observed each year on the third Saturday in September, with the goal of increasing awareness and appreciation of the Prairie State’s waterways. It was created by the Illinois River Coordinating Council, which Governor Pat Quinn has chaired since 1997.
Events involving river clean up, conservation, education and recreation will take place at dozens of locations throughout the state and public participation is encouraged to protect this precious, natural resource.
For more information about “It’s Our River Day” activities, visit www.dnr.state.il.us/iord. For a complete list of state parks and other sites, visit the IDNR website at www.dnr.state.il.us.

My family (wife and three kids, sometimes the dog) and I have been RV campers since 2007. We own a 2000 Trail-Lite B22 Bantam hybrid, our tow vehicle is a 2006 Trailblazer LT EXT (5.3 V8 with 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio), and our setup includes the Equalizer sway controller. Looking to upgrade the camper in the near future, but until then we get out 2-3 times a month in season.
I think your readers will enjoy this site. Check out MEET ME AT THE CORNER (www.meetmeatthecorner) and the interview with the Park Ranger at Balboa Park in San Diego, California.
ReplyDeleteChildren learn about the history of Balboa Park, the Pan America Exhibition and the work of a park ranger. Take a look at the upcoming shows for fall including a visit with author Kathleen Krull, an episode about the history of the banjo and just in time for Veteran's Day, an interview with a World War II Veteran
Along with the original content created by the professional staff, MEET ME AT THE CORNER is open to kid- produced content. The current video was submitted by 11 year old Sam. He interviews an animal behaviorist at the Denver Zoo. It is obvious that the episode was written and filmed by Sam but the MMATC staff did a great job of editing and adding photos and links to take the episode to a new level
MEET ME AT THE CORNER, Virtual Field Trips for Kids (www.meetmeatthecorner.org) is a series of educational video podcasts for kids ages 6-12. New episodes are uploaded every two weeks, with a Learning Corner of questions and extended activities, a list of recommended books and links to fun websites about each topic.
This is a great website for kids, parents, teachers and homeschool families.
