1. It’s Michigan Wine Month
Are you a “rosé all day” kind of traveler? You’d get down just fine in Traverse City. With about 40 different wineries within the Traverse Wine Coast, there’s a tasting room and a varietal for the whole spectrum of sippers. Check out the lodging packages through Traverse City Uncorked, the 31-day celebration of Michigan Wine Month including winemaker dinners, discounted stays, complimentary tastings and more. CLINK!
2. …And National Bike Month
Cruiser, fixie, tandem or MTB---the snow has melted and the trails are drenched in new spring sunlight (peace and blessings, winter). May is officially National Bike Month and that means the event calendar is freshly stocked with bike bashes. And the entire family can hang with local bike advocacy organization Norte for regular cycling events, or allow them to valet your bike at the Saturday farmers market. #fancy
3. You can (and should) run this town
Most people in May: I look gaunt and shake like jello.
Runners in May: I will continue to sprint double digits of miles, only now in less clothes.
There are two types of people in this world. And for the running type in Traverse City, May is a magical month of races (aka opportunities to show off you did something active this winter). The Bayshore Marathon (last Saturday in May) is an annual spring run up the Old Mission Peninsula and attracts over 7000 runners. Tails to Trails is a 5K fun run/walk on the Vasa Pathway designed for dog owners and their best pals, taking place on May 19th this year. Run Forrest, run!
Mother’s Day is May 13, but what do you get for the woman who gave you life? Last we checked, brunch IS life, therefore, Ma will reap what she sows. Take her to a winemaker’s brunch, secluded by acres of vines, or, get brunchy from the 16th floor of a resort and spa. Another option? Sip your bubbly overlooking West Grand Traverse Bay with a live jazz brunch. Either way, she’ll feel the love.
5. Eat all the things…with a touch of asparagus
Just west of Traverse City is the lakeshore village of Empire, home to the annual Asparagus Festival, happening this year May 18-20. Whether you’re a purist and prefer the spear simply salted, or you’re the adventure seeker ready for Spear Beer---you’ll find it all at this quirky celebration. Also, don’t forget to run your asparagus off at the 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday along Lake Michigan.
6. Update your profile pic in fields of cherry blossoms
Calling all selfie queens! Forget the flower aisle at the craft store. Instead, come pose in rows of fresh blossoms to the backdrop of Lake Michigan. You already know we’re the Cherry Capital of the World, but before the fruit, you get the flower. Visit in late May for the most impressive blooms and attend the interdenominational Blessing of the Blossoms service at Chateau Chantal on Sunday, May 20.
