Michigan's Belle Isle Park facility revitalization efforts ongoing

Author's note: Here's another update from the Michigan DNR about is Belle Isle revitalization efforts. I realize this issue doesn't have much interest for RVers and campers, as there is no such activity allowed on Belle Isle. However, I feel strongly that the DNR's efforts with Belle Isle needs to be publicized because an element against the DNR's efforts was so vocal in its opposition. The DNR is doing good here, folks, and I aim to make sure as much people as possible know about it.

I would like to add my comments on a related subject. Recently, Detroit City Councilwoman Brenda Jones complained of "excessive policing" on Belle Isle. Jones, as you might recall from my stories and videos, was one of the main opponents of the city releasing any control of the island park to the state. Jones and other council members criticized law enforcement on Belle Isle, which includes the Michigan State Police as well as Michigan DNR conservation officers, after the Detroit City Clerk was pulled over for speeding, the clerk said the state trooper told her he was keeping the "riffraff" off the island. To that I say, "Way to go! Keep it up!" To Jones and her cohorts I say "Leave your political agendas out of this. Cleaning Belle Isle means not just the grounds and facilities, it also means cleaning out the undesirables, who have helped give the island the negative image the state is desperately trying to change.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources staff and partners have been working indoors and out over the winter and spring to revitalize Belle Isle and its many facilities. Learn more about this work from Joe Hall, Belle Isle Park supervisor, and Jacob Brown, lead worker, in this short video.

Revitalization efforts focus on restrooms
Initial efforts focus on major restroom restorations -- repairing leaking pipes, fixing broken water lines, replacing broken fixtures, adding heating units and painting walls. The goal is to have many restrooms open this spring and the remainder open in time for summer.

Staff and partners restoring additional facilities
The Casino building, Conservatory and White House (public safety building) are also a focus. Staff and partner organizations have been working from the ground up to clear out debris, drywall and paint walls, and repair plumbing. In the process, the DNR is safeguarding the historic integrity of buildings on the island. Through partnerships, the Casino’s fire alarm and sprinkler systems have been repaired, its restrooms are under renovation and energy-efficient LED lighting has been installed.
