Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings presents Boogie Nights-notes with pianist Matthew Ball Jan. 14

Southfield, MI - On Jan. 14, 2011, pianist Matthew Ball will tickle the ivories for Boogie Night-notes. Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings' Nightnotes series takes place in the intimate atmosphere of Hagopian World of Rugs in Birmingham. A reception begins at 8 p.m. with the music starting at 8:30 p.m. Tickets start at $10 for students and can be purchased by calling 248-559-2095 or visiting www.detroitchamberwinds.org.

Matthew Ball's start in jazz only began in 2001 after he attended the Motor City Blues & Boogie-Woogie Festival. He was so awestruck by the performances there, he left his career as an attorney to become a blues and boogie-woogie performing artist. Declared as "the gen-x arrival to this uniquely American art-form," Matthew is helping to define a new generation's contribution to the boogie-woogie and jazz tradition.

"Boogie-woogie is a musical style that almost anyone can appreciate," says DCWS Operations Coordinator Hanna Sterba, "Because it's a form of music that is made for dancing, this concert will be upbeat and great for all ages. The perfect cure for the winter-time blues!"

Ball will perform popular selections from early American blues and boogie-woogie piano masters, such as:
- Albert Ammons
- Pete Johnson
- Meade "Lux" Lewis
- Henry "Professor Longhair" Byrd
- Malcom "Dr. John" Rebennack
- James Booker
- Otis Spann
- Jack Fina
