Garmin introduces the new RV 785 for RV and camping enthusiasts<br />
<div>
Road-trip ready navigator adds built-in dash camera, advanced options for RV exploration<br />
<br />
Garmin recently introduced the robust RV 785 GPS navigator that offers RV-specific navigation options and a new built-in dash camera for RV and camping enthusiasts. Designed to bring more conveniences to life on the open road, the RV 785 offers an easy-to-read high-resolution 7-inch display while automatically recording the journey and saving video of incidents. The built-in camera also allows for more sophisticated driver assistance features including lane departure and forward collision warnings designed to help encourage a safer driving experience to all the favorite campgrounds.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
“The introduction of a built-in dash camera to the RV 785 brings one of our most sought out features to RV travelers,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Drivers can sit back and take advantage of camper-friendly directories loaded into the RV 785 to easily explore new destinations, while the built-in dash camera makes it simple to record and save video of any incidents along the journey.”</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Travelers can easily prepare for their next customized adventure by inputting their motorhome profile into the RV 785. Once the navigator stores the size and weight of the RV, drivers can receive routes that take into account weight limits, steep grades and more. The RV 785 also gives drivers access to RV-specific points of interest with the integration of Ultimate Public Campgrounds, KOA, iOverlander and PlanRV. To help locate the best places for a pit stop, the RV 785 is preloaded with a directory of RV parks and services that can be filtered with personal preferences. In addition, the RV 785 utilizes a vast road-trip ready feature-set that includes the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. National Parks directory, TripAdvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare® points of interest. The navigator offers detailed mapping for North America and includes map updates for cross-country travelers to stay up-to-date with the latest map data available. Garmin Traffic is also available directly out of the box with an included traffic cable.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The RV 785 keeps drivers connected during their travels. By downloading the Garmin Drive app, it’s easy to take advantage of live traffic updates, advanced weather forecasts and photoLive traffic cameras4 right on the RV 785 navigation screen. When paired with a compatible smartphone, drivers can keep their hands on the wheel and take advantage of smart features such as hands-free calling, smart notifications5 and voice-activated navigation. And built-in Wi-Fi connectivity gives users access to map and software updates without having to connect the navigator to a computer.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The included powered magnetic mount makes it easy to attach, detach, or adjust the location of the RV 785, and a video-in port also allows for third-party wireless camera usage. The RV 785 is compatible with the Garmin BC 35 wireless backup camera solution to help drivers spot hard-to-see obstructions behind the RV.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Garmin RV 785 comes with a suggested retail price of $499.99. To learn more, visit <a href="http://www.garmin.com/">www.garmin.com</a>.</div>

As part of the Michigan state parks centennial, the Michigan DNR is hosting storytelling events where you'll hear several vetted storytellers share their playful anecdotes and deeply personal memories. These storytelling events will feature up to five storytellers and attendees that want to share two-minute anecdotes. Each event will be recorded and distilled into a special recording. The project is supported by the generosity of <a href="https://www.envirologic.com/" target="_blank">Envirologic</a>.<br />

This is part of a series of stories to mark the centennial of Michigan state parks. On May 12, 1919, the Michigan Legislature established the Michigan State Park Commission, paving the way for our state parks system. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is celebrating this milestone throughout the year with special events, podcasts, historical stories, videos, geocaching and more. In the land of the Ojibwa, along the shining shores of Keweenaw Bay, land was purchased for the creation of Baraga State Park early in the 1920s. Today, the park is a summertime gateway destination to a wide range of recreation and sightseeing opportunities in and around Baraga County.</div>

Jesuit missionary Father Menard wintered near L’Anse in the early 1660s. Father Baraga, the “Snowshoe Priest,” set up a mission nearby in 1843.</div>

The text of a Michigan historical marker said furs and fish figured prominently in the bay’s early history as a source of economic wealth, with the timber industry flourishing in the area in the late 19th century.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Development of the park began in 1924 and took a good while to complete. Early plans included potentially siting a fish hatchery next door. The park was the first mainland state park in the Upper Peninsula, established in 1922.</div>

“We moved there, that was 1937, and there was nothing there but the house and they had two box toilets on the north side and two on the south side,” said Albert “Chink” Wallin, manager at the park from 1937 to 1974. “That’s all they had there, nothing else. And the tools they had was a wheelbarrow, a shovel and a rake. In fact, it was all swamp.”</div>

The Works Progress Administration completed a lot of the work at the south end of the park, planting trees, developing features of the day-use area and beach on Lake Superior. The crews also helped enlarge the park.</div>

The park has a roughly 1-mile nature trail. There are historical attractions situated nearby, including a shrine to Bishop Baraga, with a towering statue that overlooks the expansive bay from the surrounding cliffs, an American Indian cemetery and other places associated with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.</div>

Additional activities the area offers include birdwatching, nature and landscape photography, stargazing and wildlife viewing. Off-road vehicle riders can access the local trail system from the park.</div>

“Being centrally located in the western Upper Peninsula, a lot of visitors use Baraga State Park as a base camp to visit many locations in Baraga County,” said Kelly Somero, western U.P. recreation programmer with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “Visitors also stay here and travel to the Keweenaw Peninsula, the Quincy and Adventure mines or the Porcupine Mountains, returning to the park each evening.”</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
From secluded green forests and tumbling waterfalls to quiet lakes and rocky outcroppings with beautiful vistas, there are fantastic places nearby to visit, including several state forest rustic campgrounds, each associated with a water body.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These campgrounds are for those interested in an even quieter setting, with few amenities. Picnic tables, water pumps, a fire ring and a pit toilet are provided.</div>

Baraga State Park is a beautiful place to visit. Throughout its history, park managers who have been assigned to the park have often spent a good deal of time there.</div>

The first superintendent was Peter Foss, who was born in Norway, came to America as a boy and worked in the timber industry before being appointed to his post at the park.</div>

<br /></div>

Wallin was born in Nebagamon, Wisconsin. He was interviewed for an oral history project about the park in 2005. He died in Baraga in April 2012 at age 105.</div>

“Now I can’t drive anymore so I take the lawnmower down to the restaurant, or then I go to the store, but I can’t walk anymore,” Wallin told his interviewer. “I’ll have to show you that lawnmower. You only live once they tell me. When you leave you don’t need nothing. I think we did pretty good on the park though.”</div>

According to the U.S. National Park Service, reservations will be required for all camping in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore effective July 11, 2019. Campers can begin making reservations on June 27 starting at 10 am (eastern) by going to <a href="http://www.recreation.gov/">www.recreation.gov</a> or by calling 1-877-444-6777.<br /><br />The reservation requirement will include all 67 front country campsites at Little Beaver Lake Campground, Twelvemile Campground, and Hurricane River Campground. The park’s backcountry (backpacking) sites already require reservations.<br /><br />“The campgrounds have been first come, first served since inception. This worked okay when we had half the visitation. But now, especially during July and August, the campgrounds fill up by 10 am. This has left many campers scrambling and anxious to find camping sites,” said Chief of Interpretation Susan Reece. “The reservation system will allow visitors to plan their stays ahead of time and guarantee they have a camp site when they arrive.” <br /><br />The park has set up self-help reservation stations in the Munising Falls and Grand Sable Visitor Centers. Wi-Fi is also available at both visitor centers.<br /><br />Staying in the campgrounds costs $20 per site per night. Campers are limited to 14 nights per calendar year. Group size is limited to eight. “America the Beautiful” Access and Senior pass holders receive 50% discounts on camping. <br /><br />Information on each campground, including site maps and photos, will be available on <a href="http://www.recreation.gov/">www.recreation.gov</a>, as well as the park’s camping page: <a href="http://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/camping.htm">www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/camping.htm</a>.Gr8LakesCamperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03766410892737240444noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1217552213521564419.post-63612648529141986432019-06-09T08:19:00.001-04:002019-06-09T08:19:52.608-04:00Sunday Inspiration: Tom & Caitlin Morton's 'Go North' Arctic Circle Adventure<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/K58IZntiiOk" width="560"></iframe><br />

Tom & Caitlin Morton of <a href="https://www.mortonsonthemove.com/" target="_blank">Mortons on the Move</a> aren't just going to Alaska, they're going to the Arctic Circle. Let that sink in. Many of us RVers have a trip to Alaska on their bucket list. I know I do. But where many end their journey at Denali National Park, their journey will take them to the shores of the Arctic Ocean in Tuktoyaktuk, Canada. Along the way, they make sure to travel throughout Western Canada's mountainous wilderness — something we all should consider when we take the trip to Alaska. With help from Lance Camper and several other RV companies, Tom & Cait are doing it right! Here's Episode 1; they already have four other episodes. And, since their trip will last into October, we all get plenty of opportunities o follow along on their "Go North" adventure.<br />

The park is at 6585 Lake Harbor Road in Muskegon, situated along three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.</div>
<div>
The Tin Can Tourists, a social group centered around the preservation and celebration of classic trailers and motor coaches, has been organizing this crowd favorite at Hoffmaster for the past 10 years. This year's event happens to coincide with the 100-year anniversaries of both the Tin Can Tourists and Michigan state parks.</div>

Campers and day visitors are invited to walk the wooded campsites and get a firsthand look at nearly 100 trailers from the 1930s to the 1980s that will be on display.</div>
<div>
"Whether you’re camping or just visiting for the day, everyone is welcome to see this wonderful array of vintage campers and trailers," said Melissa VanderVelde, unit supervisor at Hoffmaster State Park. "The event is different from a car show because the trailers are often available for visitors to take a peek inside and to talk to owners. It is a really fun experience."</div>
<div>
Additional Tin Can Tourist events will take place at Interlochen State Park June 22 and Port Crescent State Park July 27.</div>

Several state parks in southern Michigan will host volunteer stewardship workdays in June.<br />
<div>
The workdays support the first PlayCleanGo Awareness Week, taking place June 1–8, with events across North America encouraging outdoor enthusiasts to take action to avoid spreading invasive plants and pests while enjoying the activities they love.</div>
<div>
Volunteers are needed to remove garlic mustard, an invasive plant that threatens native habitats. Workdays are an enjoyable way to spend time outdoors getting to know Michigan’s state parks and their unique ecosystems. </div>
<div>
“Garlic mustard is a good example of an invasive plant easily spread through outdoor activities,” said Heidi Frei, DNR natural resources steward. “The PlayCleanGo campaign is a simple reminder to clean shoes, clothing and gear before moving on to a new location. This can include brushing off mud, seeds and plant fragments and hosing down bikes and ORVs to ensure invasive species aren’t carried to the next destination.” </div>
<div>
Workdays are scheduled for:<br />
• Saturday, June 1: Highland Recreation Area (Oakland County), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<br />
• Saturday, June 1: Warren Dunes State Park (Berrien County), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<br />
